Mandela, who was fondly known as "the people's president" was imprisoned for 27 years and 18 of those were on Robben Island . With him behind bars, were many freedom fighters who were locked behind bars for standing up against the oppressive laws of Apartheid and for the many injustices committed during that dark era in South Africa's history.
Robben Island, including its buffer zone, is a national heritage site and Unesco has listed the island as a world heritage site.
The Robben Island experience
Today, tourists and locals alike can tour Robben Island and give themselves the opportunity to experience a part of South Africa's history.
Visit Mandela's cell where he spent his time. It is 8x7 metres small, has a metal bucket for a toilet and thin blankets for a bed. The experience leaves visitors humbled.
Visitors can also see the lime quarry, the bluestone quarry, the army and navy bunkers, Robert Sobukwe's house and the maximum security prison, where many political prisoners were held.Robben Island is visited by boat.
The boat leaves from the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront at the times stipulated in the table below. Once the ferry leaves the harbour, visitors disembark at Murray's Bay, which is on the eastern side of the island. From there, visitors are transported to historical sites on the island. The full tour includes the round trip on the ferry, a visit to the graveyard of people who died from leprosy, the lime quarry, Robert Sobukwe's house, the bluestone quarry, the army and navy bunkers and the maximum security prison.

The duration ofthe Robben Island ferry is about 4 hours in total with 1 hour traveling time to and from the Island.
The 15:00 ferry usually only operates during season.
Please note visitors needs to ensure they are at the ferry 30 mins prior to departure time. The boarding post closes 10 mins prior to departure time.
If for any reason visitors needs to reschedule the tour, there is an administration fee involved and it should be done 48 hours prior to the departure.
If the tour is cancelled due to weather or operational difficulties, guests can request a refund for the cost of the tickets or re-schedule.
