Information

The Cape Coastal Tours Robben Island Tour is a Full Day Guided Tour of Robben Island and Cape Town.

If you are interested in South African history and the roots of the diverse culture and architecture this tour of cape town is for you.

After a boat trip to Robben Island your tour guide extends the tour through Cape Town, guests will see and explore the history, culture and architecture of Cape Town.

Pick up time for the Robben Island tour is between 8:00 to 8:30am. This tour begins the morning off with the famous ferry that goes out to Robben Island. Robben Island with its broad history tells you a story of how the people of South Africa struggled in the fight for freedom. The Great Nelson Mandela spent 18 of the 27 years on Robben Island. The Island is a World Heritage Site that attracts 1000's of tourist each year. The boat ride leaves from Victoria and Alfred (V&A waterfront).

When Jan Van Riebeeck arrived at the Cape in 1652 the Island was used as a place to replenish passing by ships. The Island was full of wild life with many sea life such as penguins and seals. The word Rob means "Seal" Island in the Dutch language. In later years the British occupation came into control and used the island as a place for whale watching. The Island was also used at some point as a hospital for the mentally ill, unloved people in society such as alcoholics and persons with sexually transmitted disease. In the 1900's the island changed to a place for political prisoners. Nelson Mandela spent some of his time in the prison.

Arriving back at the V and A waterfront harbour we would make our way to the famous Bo-kaap meaning (upper Cape Town) with an optional lunch stop to taste some local cuisine. Spending some time in the bo-kaap we pass by the beautiful colourful homes which is situated on the slopes of the Signal Hill Mountains. Bo-Kaap for many years has been known as the Cape Malay head Quarters of Cape Town.

The people of the bo-kaap comes from the time of slavery, many of whom were skilled in carpentry, brick layers etc. The area has a cultural feeling especially for the Muslim community around Cape Town referred to as the Cape Malay culture. The colourful British style homes and the rich culture makes the area a prime location for expensive property. The oldest mosque around, is the Auwal Mosque.

The area is as well popular for the cobble streets and the bo-kaap museum. Making our way down to the city we pass by many historical buildings.

Our Robben Island Tour includes visits to the company gardens, the cathedral church and slave lodge. We also stop for history at the district 6 museum as part of the day trip.

The Company Gardens situated at the end of Adderley Street in the city. The Gardens was initially built as a fruit and vegetable garden in the mid 1600's for passing by ships in the past. A walk down Government Avenue stretches in the direction towards Table Mountain. The Garden holds beautiful views and holds well established historical buildings, statues of historical figures as well as the S.A. Museum. The different rulings in the past made many changes to the garden. The garden was also used as a zoo for some of the wild life in past.

The Cathedral church has a beautiful design by John Skirrow and built by Sir Herman Schutter. The design originally came from London. The Cathedral was built in the early 1800's and for many years had no Bishop. The Cathedral was part of the Dutch reformed church and was completed in 1834.

The slave lodge was used as a living place in the 1600s for the slaves who were brought to the Cape. The 1st one hundred and seventy slaves arrived at the Cape after two vessels were sent on the West Coast to get slaves. The slaves worked under command of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Slavery has been around for a 131 years in total. The Slave lodge was used in later years as the head courters for government and a library in the past.

Our final stop is the District 6 Museum. District 6 was the six municipal district of the Cape. The District 6 was referred to as a slums area in the 1900's. It was the place where many slaves of various raced lived in the past. When the white apartheid government was in control the group areas act caused 60 000 people forcibly to leave their homes and it was bull dozed, much of the land was not used. The original buildings left were the churches and the mosque. Parts of the land were used as a technical university.
