Cape Town has of the most diverse amount of fish for human consumption.
The fish caught off the coast are either canned or turned into fish-meal, but are also sold to restaurants, shops and also the public from our harbours and fishermen.
Most of our fish are caught in purse seine nets, but the larger fish are taken in by trawls.
Fish are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which in return are very healthy for us to eat. Fish is a delicate dish and we should aim to eat at least one to two fish meals per week.
Our fishermen catch fish on a daily basis, and the most well-known fish on the Cape menu are hake, Snoek, Kingklip, Kob, Elf, White Steenbras, Yellowfin Tuna, Red Roman, Yellow Tail, Red Stump Nose, White Stump Nose, 74, Sole, and Cape Salmon. Our Fish use for cans are Sardines, Pilchards, Anchovy, Maasbankers and Red Eye.

Hake , often known as Stockfish is our most popular Table Fish off the menu of South Africa. This Fish is often caught by trawlers over the Agulhas banks in depths of between 35 and 600 metres.
Kob better known as Kabeljou. This fish is found all along our coast. It's large and silvery and preys on smaller fish. It's a firm and very tasty Fish which is very popular with anglers and fishermen.
Kinglip is an eel-like fish and this is caught using the long-line method of fishing.
Red Roman is a beautiful fish and is red-orange in colour. It is a small fish, usually caught off rocky parts of the coast. This fish in Afrikaans is known as the rooiman (meaning "Red Man").
Snoek is a well-known fish of the Cape and is large and fierce. This fish eats Pilchards, Anchovies and also Shrimps and Squid. This fish is mainly caught during Autumn and winter but are also found throughout the year. It is famously eaten fresh or smokked
Steenbras , the white steenbras is one of the best known fish that we find along our coast. They have week teeth but thick lips and is also quite tasty.
Red Stumpnose are found in deep waters and are solitary fish. This fish is also known by the locals as "Miss Lucy" or "Magistraat". Whereas the white stump nose are shoaling fish. This fish is mainly caught by anglers on dark nights.
Tuna , also caught in our waters and the largest is the Yellowfin Tuna and weighs up to 180 kilogram.
Yellowtail is a nice firm fish when cooked. They are blue-green above with silvery flanks and yellow fins and of cause they get their names from the yellow tail. They swift swimmers and are caught as they follow the Sardine run.
Cape Salmon also known as Geelbek, is a very popular fish caught in our waters. They can easily way up to 25 kilogram and reach the lengths of 130 centimetres. There has been a decline in number, because of its flesh tasting so delicious.
Sole , this fish is flat with extremely delicate flesh. They live on the sea bottom and lie with the blind side against the sand and eyes facing up. This is rather and expensive fish to eat but very tasty.
Line-fish , is also a popular fish caught and is lined using lines not trawls or anglers. Line-fish is also very popular in our restaurants.
Galjoen , they are medium sized and found close to rocky shores along our coast. Galjoen also known as black fish. The Galjoen is found only between Angola and South Africa and also known as the national fish of South Africa. It reaches 80 centimetres and weighs up to 6.5 kilogram.
Our fishermen also catches Crayfish, Prawns and Squid used for calamari which are also used for fish dishes and are rather pricy. Fish is and expensive dish and is made in many different fish dishes at households, Fast foods and restaurants and enjoyed by many.
